Postdoc in modeling environmental and social influences on waterborne pathogen and helminth transmission

Environmental and Social Influences on Waterborne Pathogen and Helminth Transmission available on a NSF-funded project (epidemiology/infectious diseases/transmission dynamics/enteric and helminth pathogens/environmental health/social networks/agent-based modeling) Department of Epidemiology, School of Public Health, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor

The Department of Epidemiology at the University of Michigan seeks to hire one postdoctoral fellow with interest and skills in analytical methods for estimating how physical and social environments interact to influence the transmission of waterborne pathogens. Support for the position is now available for up to two years through a NSF Water Sustainability and Climate grant entitled “Analytical methods for estimating the joint climatological-social drivers of water quality and supply in contrasting tropical zones: Ecuador and China.” The grant includes faculty in Epidemiology (Joe Eisenberg, Michigan), Anthropology (Jim Trostle, Trinity College), and Environmental Health (Justin Remais, Emory). The successful applicant will be a productive scholar who combines skills and knowledge related to water resources, waterborne disease, and climate change with an interest in modeling complex human/environment interactions. The ideal candidate has quantitative background and a PhD in disease ecology, epidemiology, anthropology, geography, sociology, or other integrative field; previous experience in modeling epidemiological or ecological systems; and previous high-quality, first-authored publications. The fellow will help to develop agent-based, system dynamic, or network models as appropriate, and to develop region-specific scenarios based on specific processes that mediate how water quality and waterborne disease transmission respond to climate variability, management decisions, and coping capacity at the village level. Knowledge of Spanish or Chinese is a plus but not required.

The University of Michigan offers a vibrant mathematical modeling and complex systems community. Modeling expertise extends across departments including Epidemiology, Health Management and Policy, Complex Systems, Population Center, Institute for Social Research, and Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. The School of Public Health is renowned for its cutting edge research on the applications of mathematical modeling in epidemiology and public health.

Applicants must have completed all requirements for a doctoral degree in a relevant field from an accredited program before they begin the fellowship. Applicants must have a record of accomplishment in modeling and systems science demonstrated in their publications and research background. Initial appointments will be for one year, with possibility of renewal. The salary will be in the range of $45,000 per year (depending on experience), plus fringe benefits. Compensation (salary and benefits) will be offered according to University of Michigan and NSF guidelines.

To apply please submit CV, names of references, and inquiries to Dr. Joseph Eisenberg, Professor of Epidemiology, at HYPERLINK "mailto:jnse@umich.edu"jnse@umich.edu. Starting date is negotiable. Applicants should send a cover letter, a detailed CV, a brief statement of research interests, and the names of three references to Dr. Joseph Eisenberg at HYPERLINK "mailto:jnse@umich.edu"jnse@umich.edu. The position will remain open until filled.

Barry Wellman Honoured

Barry Wellman Honoured
The founder of INSNA, Professor Barry Wellman, co-director of NetLab at the Faculty of Information (iSchool) of the University of Toronto, has been awarded an OII Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his extraordinary record of scholarship in social network theory and Internet research which has contributed so much to our understanding of life online. A Canadian-American sociologist, his overarching interest is in the paradigm shift from group-centered relations to networked individualism. His research examines virtual community, the virtual workplace, social support, community, kinship, friendship, and social network theory and methods. His methodological contributions have been for the analysis of ego-centered or "personal" networks - defined from the standpoint of an individual. This calls for somewhat different techniques than the more common social network practice of analysing a single large network.
Barry Wellman said "I am deeply honoured by this. And want to pay tribute to the many NetLab members - and Networked co-author Lee Rainie - who have been my wonderful intellectual playmates through the years." OII Acting Director, Dr Victoria Nash said "Barry Wellman's approach to studying the networks that connect us as individuals has had a profound effect on the field of Internet research, reflected in much of the work of our colleagues and students. We are delighted to honour his contribution today. " The top-cited Canadian sociologist, Wellman's current work continues to focus on the interplay between information and communication technologies, especially the Internet, social relations and social structure. He was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 2007.
The award will be presented on 7th November in Oxford, at an awards dinner and ceremony that also includes Lifetime Achievement awards for Sir Tim Berners Lee and Dame Stephanie Shirley.

INSNA Call for Award Nominations

Dear INSNA Members,

Just a short email to solicit nominations for two awards to be made at Sunbelt XXXIV 18-23 February 2014 in St Pete Beach. FL.

1. The Freeman Award. This award is given to a distinguished scholar in the field of social networks for significant contributions to the scientific study of social structure. The award is designed to be given to a young scholar, someone in the earlier stages of their research career -- someone under 40 years old or someone who has received their PhD within the past 10 years. Consideration is also given to persons who have come to education later in life or who have interrupted their career for any reason (family, health, etc.) The winner of this award is selected by a committee designated by the INSNA Board president. Suggested recipients are nominated by members of the committee and by any interested members of the social network community at large. The Committee considers the nominated candidates' contributions and qualifications through a series of electronic discussions. Carter Butts (Chair), Bruce Cronin, and Betina Hollstein have agreed to serve on the screening committee for this award. Nominations should be sent to the chair at buttsc@uci.edu. The recipient will be announced in February and deliver the Freeman lecture at Sunbelt XXXV in Brighton, UK, now scheduled for 23-28 June 2015.

2. The Best Student Paper Award. The award is given annually to a graduate student in recognition of research on social network analysis. For the 2014 competition, students should submit a paper (pdf file written in English) by 15 December 2013. The winner of the award will be announced at Sunbelt XXXIV in 2014. To be eligible, the student must be the first (or sole) author on the submitted paper at the time of submission. The paper may be published or unpublished and must have been completed within two years of the submission deadline. A letter of support should be submitted as well. Papers are evaluated by a committee based on the level of originality in the ideas and techniques, the possible applications and their treatment, and potential impact. The committee may arrive at the conclusion that none of the submitted papers merits the award. The monetary prize for the best student paper is $2,500. Filip Agneessens (Chair), Elisa Bellotti, and Chris McCarty have agreed to serve on this committee. Please send all application materials to INSNA President, John Skvoretz, jskvoretz@usf.edu.
